40-Day Long Harsh Winter Period ‘Chillai Kalan’ Begins In Kashmir

SRINAGAR (KIMS) — The 40-day long period of harsh winter known as ‘Chillai Kalan’ begins in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

The 40-day long ‘Chillai Kalan starts on December 21, it is followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’.

On the first day of ‘Chillai Kalan’, the Summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar recorded minus 4.3°C, Qazigund and Kupwara each minus 4.0°C, Pahalgam minus 5.8°c, Kokernag and Gulmarg each minus 3.0°C as the Minimum temperature.

The Winter Capital, Jammu recorded 7.3°C, Katra 7.4°C, Batote 6.0°C, Bhaderwah 2.4°C and Banihal 7.6°C as the Minimum temperature.

In Ladakh region, Leh recorded minus 11.8°C and Kargil minus 11.4°C as the Minimum temperature.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department (MeT) on Thursday forecast generally dry weather in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir till the end of this month.

An official of the Meteorological Department (MeT) said, “Generally dry weather is expected in Jammu and Kashmir till December 23rd. Similar weather conditions will prevail in the Union Territory from December 24th to 26th and from December 28th to 31st.”

He said, “Generally cloudy weather is expected with possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir on December 23rd and 27th.” — (KIMS)
