ANN NEWS DESK
A devastating cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district has left the region in mourning, claiming at least 28 lives and leaving several others missing. The incident occurred early Thursday in the Chositi area, triggering flash floods and massive destruction. Rescue teams from the Army, NDRF, SDRF, police, and local administration are working tirelessly to search for survivors.
Amid the devastation, a glimmer of hope emerged when rescue teams successfully saved a child trapped in the debris. The child has been shifted to safety, while medical units are providing treatment to the injured.
A senior police officer told ANN NEWS that rescue operations remain ongoing in extremely challenging conditions. “We fear the toll could rise as several people are still missing,” he said. Additional resources, including heli-rescue teams and specialized equipment, have been deployed to speed up the search and recovery mission.
Official Response and Cancellations
In the wake of the tragedy, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced the cancellation of the scheduled “At Home” tea party and all cultural events for Independence Day.
“In light of the tragedy caused by the cloudburst in Kishtwar, I have taken the decision to cancel the ‘At Home’ tea party tomorrow evening. We have also decided not to go ahead with the cultural events during the morning Independence Day celebrations,” the CM said.
However, he clarified that formal Independence Day proceedings—including the flag hoisting, speech, and march past—will continue as planned.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Union Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh have assured all possible assistance to the affected families. Relief teams have been stationed at multiple points to provide immediate aid, while authorities have appealed to the public to avoid visiting the affected areas to ensure smooth rescue operations.
The tragedy has cast a shadow over the Independence Day celebrations, with prayers and condolences pouring in from across the country for the victims and survivors of the Kishtwar cloudburst.
